November is a busy time of year for me, between my birthdays, Thanksgiving, #NaBloPoMo (a challenge that helps get me back writing again for a month), I have a lot going on. But despite that, I will once again also be participating in Movember.
The first question I usually get is, “Why?” I am going to be honest, when I first heard about “No Shave November” which eventually morphed into what is now Movember, I thought it was a pretty silly, and somewhat petty concept. I thought it was nothing more than a bunch of guys wanting something “for men” after a very pink October for Breast Cancer awareness. And maybe, that is where it began… I can’t say for sure. But I can say that now… well, now it is much more than that.
As a started reading about it after seeing some other people I know participate… I learned some things. Not only just about Movember, but about the causes they are trying to raise awareness about. It was at that moment it hit me. It raised my awareness about this issues, which is exactly what it was supposed to do. Meaning… It works. So now I am participating in an effort to raise awareness in others.
So what is Movember all about?
Well, while you can say Movember is about “men’s issues”… it really encompasses several important issues that each deserve a discussion, Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, mental health issues, and more specifically suicide prevention. Almost 13% of men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives, 1 in 20 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer. 1 in every 4 men will content with some sort of mental health issue, and worldwide, more than 510,000 men committed suicide last year. That is almost one per minute. Like I said… shocking statistics, and obviously things worth being aware of.
So, I will be growing my mustache once again, as well as raising money for these causes over at my MoBro Page, and asking others to get involved (Yes, even Mo Sistas), whether it be by growing a mustache of your own, donating to the cause, starting your own fund raising page, the important part is to get involved and help spread the word.
I will, along with the rest of my posts this month discuss these issues, along with some personal stories about why I think this is important, so be sure to come on back every day in Movember. #Movember #NaBloPoMo
