This weekend will our annual whirlwind of activity. We already learned our lesson a couple of years back, and separated out (for the sake of our home) LatteGirl’s birthday party into two separate and distinct events. One for the children, to be held away from our home, since the extra expense of having the party elsewhere is far less expensive both physically, mentally (and quite possibly financially when you factor in repairs) than having it at home. Then Sunday, we follow up with the “family party” which is much more simple, at least by appearance than dealing with the children, but that is in fact really a fabrication.
No, the real expense of the family party came this weekend, as I dedicated blood, sweat, money (and possibly even a few tears) in the pursuit of having a yard that is actually not embarrassing to have other people see.
Weeds cut, plants planted, pool officially completed, cleaned and opened. Bar-B-que ready to go, everything that should be mowed was mowed, everything that needed to be taken out was. Everything unsightly (by TheWife’s standards) either thrown in the trash, or at least stashed somewhere until after the event.
It is a similar pattern every year. And like every Tuesday after Memorial Day, I am glad to be back at work to get a break from it all. This year though, unlike years past, the work is actually completed. No late night working out in the dark trying to get a few more tasks done. Nope! This year, I took on the yard, and for a change, I won.
I should probably be knocking on large blocks of wood right about now though. Because I still have the always fun task(s) of “Some Assembly Required” and “Batteries Not Included” to contend with.
So, how was your weekend? Does Memorial Day “officially” mark your beginning of Summer?
